Juniors host Oakmeadians
Verwood played host to Oakmeadians on Sunday 24th November Despite the inclemental weather this was very successful. Our thanks also the Roy Hacker of the Fayerwood for hosting us after the event and providing food.

Fordingbridge II
Verwood fielded their Second XV's for this game in what proved to be an entertaining encounter. A record breaking appearance for the Verwood front row!

In what is believed to be a Guinness Book record, Verwood fielded a front row with a combined age of 167 in the trio of Ken Banks, Robin Peirce and Roy Hammond! A remarkable achievement for them. Fordingbridge won 20-14. See Match Report. See Fordingbridge RFC

Pitch Update
All things being equal, Verwood will play their first home game at Potterne on Saturday 2nd November. It is hoped to erect the Club's new rugby posts on the 3rd November.
Awards for All Grant
The Club's Junior Section has been given an enormous boost by the award to the Club of a grant of £4,700. Dave Hockaday, the Club's Rugby community Officer, co-ordinated the application. "Sports England have recognised that we are serious about our initiatives and this will help us deliver our School coaching plans and fund equipment purchase for our Junior Section". See the Junior Section of this Web Site - Junior Section
Salisbury Stones
As Potterne Park is still out of action (hopefully until only the end of the month), Verwood faced Salisbury Stones away on 19th October. Salisbury are of course one of the premier Clubs in Wiltshire.
When First & Second XV's have no game, it is of course tempting to strengthen the lower order which is exactly what Salisbury did at a time when Verwood rested various players. A 41-15 win to Salisbury must be a huge disappointment to them in the circumstances, particularly as the second half was drawn 15-15.
See Match Report
Kingsclere
Verwood visited North Hampshire on Saturday 12 Octoberthe losing 31-5 to Kingsclere. See  Match Report
Overton
Verwood lost away to Overton 34-19 on Saturday 5th October. This was far from a disappointing result as it represented a tremendous performance by the Club. The score was locked at 22-19 until the last 10 minutes of the game when Overton ran in two tries against the run of play. See  Match Report

Simon's Cuban Holiday update
HAVANA, Cuba (Reuters) - Hurricane Lili gathered force over the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and took aim at the United States with 120-mile-per-hour winds after pummeling Cuba, forecasters said.
Rains over Western Cuba diminished on Wednesday morning as Lili moved away into the Gulf after uprooting trees and ripping off roofs in the western tobacco-growing province of Pinar del Rio on Tuesday.
Cuba had evacuated 360,000 people from low-lying coastal areas and precarious housing, and took steps to gather ripening crops before the storm. No fatalities were reported.
It was the second major storm to hit Pinar del Rio in 11 days, a one-two punch not felt in Cuba since 1948. Again, no casualties were reported.
Fallen trees and telephone lines blocked streets. Power supplies were cut off in the province.
"My God, my house was small but it was my house. Now I have no house!" wept Zenaide, a woman on the outskirts of Pinar del Rio city. Her wooden home had listed completely to one side. Luckily, Simon was on hand.

Paxton Pumas
Verwood beat Paxton Pumas 15-12 in their first League game of the Season.Verwood led 10-6 at half-time thanks to a try from Gary Maidment converted by Neil Westerman who also landed a penalty. Paxton scored two penalties. Verwood had to sustain all the pressure in the second half in which Paxton added two further penalties to lead 12-10 until the dying minutes of the game. Verwood were awarded a penalty 15 metres out. The ball was fed to Tim Wynn who crashed over to score. See  Match ReportLeague Table  See  Hampshire Division 3 Results

"Izzy" Inches Closer!
Tropical Storm Isidore was making its way north toward the U.S. Gulf Coast on Wednesday 25th September  but showing little increase in strength after battering Mexico's Yucatan peninsula earlier this week.

Isidore slammed Cuba late last week, forcing the evacuation of an estimated 292,000 people. Only Simon Banks can decide to go on a Cuban Holiday during the Hurricane season and missing the first two League games!!

Potterne Park Pumping Station Enhancement - Use of Rugby Pitch
The latest news is that Wessex Water claim to be on target to complete the project at the end of October.

There may be Health & Safety issues preventing us from making use of the pitch by shortening it because of the close proximity of the undertaking.
The Club is still pursuing issues of compensation, particularly in relation to having to play all its matches awat from home, and the necessary replacement of the posts.
These new posts have now been ordered. Let's hope we will have a pitch to make use of them!

Powergen Junior Vase
Verwood were drawn away to Fawley on Saturday 21st September in the first round of this National Cup competition aimed at Junior Clubs.
Verwood were comprehensively defeated 71-0.
This was Verwood’s first venture in the Powergen Junior Vase and the Club’s heaviest defeat in three seasons. Although the early exchanges did not suggest there would be such a margin of victory, Verwood were comprehensively beaten by the Hampshire Division 2 side. So many Fawley players contributed to a pulsating performance in which they led 31-0 at the interval having at that stage scored 5 tries. Verwood were well and truly out of the game even at that stage. Even when Fawley lost their shape and Verwood stepped into the holes that were left, they did not have the personnel or vision to take full advantage. “We were rubbish” admitted Robin Peirce Verwood’s Team Manager. “There was complete incoherence in our back play and the three quarters must mirror the pack’s performance as there were tremendous individual contributions from our forwards in all phases”

Local rivals Ellingham & Ringwood also went out of the cup also losing comprehensively to Fordingbridge 30-10. Remember that article in the Times about Ellingham in 1999? See  Ellingham

Swanage & Wareham
Verwood lost away to Swanage and Wareham III on Saturday 14th September.Verwood regretted resting a number of  regulars for this game as Swanage & Wareham showed their Club’s considerable strength in depth. On a sunny September afternoon, Swanage fielded 10 fresh faced youngsters all about to embark on the magical mystery tour of University life next weekend. With the sun on their backs and a spring in their step, it was perhaps not surprising that they were able to run in a total of 7 tries during the course of this fast and furious encounter.

Debutantes
Congratulations to Liam Hacker and James Turner who played their first games for Verwood on Saturday and both scored tries on their debuts.

First game against Puddletown
The Club's opening game of the season was away to Puddletown on Saturday 7th September. Despite trailing 21-0 at half time, Verwood put on a remarkable second half display to draw the game 26-26.

The Rugby Pitch
The major drainage works being carried out by Wessex Water's drainage contractors are apparently behind schedule. This will impact on the use of the Club's pitch. It is now proposed to shorten the pitch so that the first home matches can be played in October. This will necessitate the Club replacing its posts.
Level 1 Coaching Course
Tim Wynn, Dave Hockaday, Natalie Clark, Andrew Hoggins & Neil Scarisbrick attended a Level 1 coaching course hosted by Weymouth RFC on September 1st and 8th.
August 2002
Pre-season Training
This has been going extremely well. On Thursday 29th August 12 players changed and active by 7.15pm.  This increased to 16 by 7.30 and ultimately rose to 20 - excellent for this point in the season.  To make the best use of the light the sessions now begin at 7pm.
16 players took the bleep test (the whole thing took 12 minutes).  Dave Hockaday will collate the results. The intention isto run the bleep test once a month.
Tag Rugby Course
Dave Hockaday, Andy Hoggins and Natalie Clark attended an Introduction to Tag Rugby Course run at Dorchester Rugby Club by Dan Brown (Dorset RDO) on 18th August. This is all part of the Club's programme to develop a junior section in October this year.
Ellingham Show
The Club are pleased to be associated with the Ellingham & Ringwood Agricultural Show and helped with setting up at the Showground.

Summer Academy

The morning of Sunday 28th July saw the final week of the Summer Academy which finished with a round robin tournament of Tag Rugby. Our particular thanks go to Dany Johnson for all his help and assistance on the coaching side. Unfortunately, he is unable to attend the last session., but he says:

Wot no in Goal Area?
The Club has decided on its tactics for the forthcoming season. As a special dispensation from the RFU, the Club has been allowed to play one way this season due to Wessex Water undertaking major drainage works at Potterne Park. How many points is this worth? Is this a record for the shortest ever in-goal area?

The work will hopefully be complete by the end of September. However, all the Club's Matches will be away in September to accommodate these works.

Pre-Season Training
Bob Burr has managed to enlist the services of his nephew, Robbie Burr, a professional Fitness trainer  who hasworked with the Brisbane Broncos, a Super 12 Club. He will take us through the first two
pre-season sessions on Friday 12th July and Friday 19th July @ 7.30pm. Following this, (back to
Thursdays) at the session on 25th July there will be fitness tests. The purpose is to gauge each
individual’s fitness so that a benchmark can be obtained to measure improved fitness over the
months ahead. These simple tests will be repeated probably at 4 weekly intervals.
The first coaching sessions will commence on 15th August. The Club's coaching team have decided to map the season ahead so that everyone can see what the purpose is of each session is and can prepare accordingly. If any playing member has not had a copy of this document please contact any member of the committee.
