The Rugby Continuum 2002/3 Summary
This is a directive of the RFU aimed at the 7-12 yr. age groups the purpose of which is to provide a coaching pathway through which, by gradual degrees, Girls and boys together acquire the skills to play the full 15-a-side game at the age of under 13. There are three Stages covering six different age grades.
Age is determined as at midnight 31st August.1st September 2002. In no circumstances is there to be “up” ageing between groups and no more than a maximum of 2 may be down aged but only of there are insufficient to form a team.
Stage 1 (Under 7 & 8)
These age groups will play non-contact Tag Rugby. The under 9s have
the option of playing non-contact mini rugby which is the touch version
of the game. However, the RFU are phasing this out for season 2003/4 and
the Club is adopting Tag Rugby as the appropriate coaching pathway.
Format:
Pitch - 60 x 30m (5m in-goal area); 7 aside (but not less than 5);
10 minutes each way; Size 3 balls.
Key Skills Coached:
Catching, passing & general Ball handling; evasion; support running;
Method: Through a variety of “fun” games and drills
Stage 2 (Under 9 & 10)
These age groups will play Mini Contact Rugby. Tackling is allowed;
the 3 man scrum is introduced as well as 2 man lineouts; rucks and mauls
are introduced; No kicking is permitted; No hand or fend offs
• Under 9s -Scrums & lineouts are uncontested
• Under10s - Scrums & lineouts are contested (but without support
or lifting)
Format:
Pitch - 60 x 35m (5m in-goal area); 9 aside (three to form scrum; 15
minutes each way;
Size 3 balls (u9); Size 4 (u10).
Key Skills Coached:
Contact skills - tackle, maul. rucks; 3 man scrums (NB front row formation
& binding & rules of engagement; Linouts - jumping, throwing-in,
peeling, driving;
Stage 3 (Under 11 & 12)
These age groups will play Midi Contact Rugby. This is a 12 aside game
consisting of 5 forwards and 7 Backs; 5 man scrums & 4 man linouts
(no lifting or support play); No fly hacking/hand/fend offs; Kicks at goal
in front of posts introduced. Drop kick re-starts 9 but no drop-goals.
Format:
Pitch - 60 x 43m (5m in-goal area); 12 aside (five to form scrum; 20
minutes each way;
Size 4 balls.
Key Skills Coached:
Contact skills - tackle, maul. rucks; 5 man scrums (NB front row &
lock formation, binding & rules of engagement; Lineouts - jumping,
throwing-in, peeling, driving.
