World Cup Final
Congratulations to England in winning the World Cup. What a final!!
Fines will be handed out to all those who failed to attend at the Swans
to watch the final - a full house, great atmosphere.
On Thursday 20th November, there was a great turn out for the
England v Australia Touch Rugby match. Strangely, this ended in a draw
at full time which England also went on to win! Spooky.
On Friday 21st November, Mike Wheatley's Thai evening and wine-tasting
was a great success at the RBL. Our thanks to Mike for organising this
and those that did all the washing up ( in particular Phil & Chantel)!!

Ventnor
Verwood played overseas on Saturday 8th November against top of the
Table Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. Verwood came away with little change

of all was the strange disappearance of winger Wayne Vaughan who vanished
before boarding the mini bus for the outward journey. Alien abduction has
been rumoured and the Club are seriously considering insuring against such
eventualities. See Extra-terrestrial

Miles, her balloon having been found in the Yeovil area by L Burgess from
Long Sutton. The Second prize (a case of wine) was won by Mr Marlow and
it was found in the same region but had not travelled as far. It was returned
by Colin Shore of Trowbridge. The prizes were presented just prior to kick

Chineham
Verwood are top of Hampshire 3 following their dramatic win over Chineham

in a game which they dominated throughout. See

Powergen Junior Vase First Round
Verwood failed to progress beyond the first round of the Powergen Vase.
Although the early exchanges did not suggest there would be such a margin
of victory, Verwood were comprehensively beaten by the Hampshire Division
2 side from Portsmouth 48-0.
Verwood’s Captain, Phil Huckle was not too despondent after the game. He
said “They were a well drilled side and are likely to progress to the final
stages of this national competition. Even so, there were tremendous individual
contributions from our forwards in all phases. We must now focus on the
League and next week’s game away to Chineham.” See Nomads

Verwood beat Poole 35-0 in Season
opener
A total of six tries were scored in a game where the scoreline belies
the contribution which Poole
made to this thoroughly entertaining match. The weather conditions
were perfect for open running
rugby on a sunny crisp afternoon and both sides played the game in
great spirit.
Verwood’s new captain, Phil Huckle, was full of praise for his team after
the match. “We played
15 man rugby throughout which is the style of game we are trying to
develop. I was particularly
impressed by the contributions made by our new players Chris Goldsworthy,
Tony Cosgrove and
Mark Huhne.”
Verwood are in League action next Saturday, against East Dorset RFC
when last season’s Captain
Neil Westerman is expected to make his first appearance.

support for Verwood's Rustic Fayre held at Potterne Park on the Bank Holiday

after his encounter with Shrek. But who's the mysterious guy in the shadows?
First Prize is a £100 and some tickets have already been returned.
The winner will be announced at the end of September.
Touch Rugby - The "Touchy Feelies"

13-9 in the end. The next encounter is at Meyrick Park at 7pm on Wednesday
13th August.

his crew & "the Phoenix"
July 2003
Curry Night
A successful Curry Night out on Friday 26th July @ the Indian Cottage
Ringwood. Our thanks to Mike Wheatley for organising this. He did well.
Swanage Raft Race
Verwood RUFC successfully defended the RNLI Shield on Saturday 19th
July in the annual RNLI Swanage Raft Race. Having won the race in 2002,
the Club saw off some fierce nautical opposition, (not least the Swanage
Sailing & Boating Club). BP finishing second and the RNLI in third
place.
Roy Hammond (picture top left) lead the Verwood entry, having put his team
through a strict training regime over the last 12 months helped by a potent
brew which Simon Banks had brought back from Crete (Haki??). Verwood's
theme this year was "Harry Potter"(picture top right). Roy's unique raft
design skills saw the craft glide through the water at a considerable rate
of knots. The team finished the course a good 5 minutes ahead of BP. There
are now moves afoot to rename the Club "Verwood Rugby Sailing & Boating
Club"
Fixtures 2003/4
These are now pretty much settled thanks to the efficiency

The Nick Carlyon Memorial Match
- Saturday 26th April
Verwood Past 52 Verwood Present
25
The last game of the season was another fitting
tribute the to the late Nick Carlyon who died in 2001. He was a young man
and a friend to all at Verwood RUFC. As a founder member of our Club, he
played in the front row and later in the backs at centre. His happy and
generous disposition was always apparent.
Sadly, he took his own life.
This year's match again produced open and flowing
rugby with the Past winning 52-25.
Final League Position
The final League games in Hampshire Division
3 were played on 12th April. Congratulations to both Kingsclere (League
winners) and Overton who are both promoted to Division 2. See League
Table
Lychett Minster
Verwood lost 17-31 to Lychett on Saturday 5th
April in an ill tempered Match. Phil Emery went over for two tries for
Verwood.
